Alakol Lake
Location: Alakol Lake is located on the border of the Almaty and East Kazakhstan regions at an altitude of 347 meters above sea level.
Description: More than 15 tributaries flow in the lake. The highest temperature on the surface of water is -26 degrees, in shallow coastal areas in the northern zone is 30 degrees. At a depth of 20 meters the water temperature does not exceed 18 degrees.

The  length of the lake is 104 km, width 52 km, average depth of 22 meters, maximum depth of 54 meters. Between XII to XIX centuries it had several names: Turge-Nor (from Mongolian “bridge-lake”), Alaktagol, Alateniz, Alakta. More than 15 tributaries flow in the lake, of which the main rivers are the Urzhar, Katynsu, Emelkuysa, Yrgayty, Zhamanty, Zhamanotkol and Tasty.

In south-west Alakol is limited by Jungar Alatau mountains, on the west by mountains Arganaty Arkhara, from the east by the backbone of  Barlyk, from the north by the backbone of Western Tarbagatai. Alakol with lakes Sasykkol, Uyaly, Zhalanashkol and other, forms Alakol lake systems. The bottom of the lake is gravel, off the coast in places muddy. The climate is continental coast. Maximum air temperature is 42 degrees, the minimum is 46 degrees. The highest temperature on the surface of water is 26 degrees; in shallow coastal areas in the northern zone is 30 degrees. At a depth of 20 meters the water temperature does not exceed 18 degrees. Alakol Lake water is marine by its structure and includes almost the entire periodic table (except iodine), which promotes treatment of many diseases. Alakol depression refers to the zone of insufficient moisture climatologically and is an excellent place for treatment of pulmonary diseases. The curative properties of Alakol Lake with dry, pure, rich in mineral salts steppe air contribute to treatment of many skin diseases, a positive effect on the Musculoskeletal system. They are useful for the treatment of peripheral nervous system.
In the central part of the lake is an archipelago of three islands. In 1998 there was created Alakol State Nature Reserve. Alakol is the most important crossroads of migration routes of birds commuters in Central Asia, flying from the distant Indian and African wintering grounds. It is Alakol lakes where hundreds of thousands of birds, find peace and relaxation after tiring flights; among them are listed in the Red Book: Pink and the Dalmatian pelican, Whooper swan, white-headed duck, white-tailed, short-toed snake, demoiselle, bustard, and others. Known aerial and rare birds such as flamingos, ibis, Little Egret.
There are a lot of  fish: white perch, gosy Osman, monochrome Sloth bear, lake and river marinka, carp, perch and carp. Along the northern and north-eastern coasts of the lake and estuaries usual muskrat. In the reeds found spotted cat, musk-rat, etc.
