Description:
MONAKHOV’s GORGE is located in the mountains of the Zailiysky Alatau in the Gorge Maralsai, in the territory of Almaty Nature Reserve. This place is rightly called the riddle of past and present. Here are interweaving amazing landscapes with prints stories of legends and mystery. Monakhov’z gorge is called so because in the early 1920’s the Orthodox Skhimniks were hiding in the caves from Bolsheviks.
They huddled in a rock crevice in which had built a small churchlet. But whether under someone’s report, whether on imprudence they have been noticed by the authorities. Monks have been shot, and a cave with church was blown up. Now on this place there is only superficial corridor of an input in a rock hiding place, and a decayed old wooden cross which, on one sources, is a monument to the lost priests.
Our excursion passes in two stages – an ascension to a hiding place of monks and to the waterfalls on gorge and simple walk to a mouth of two rivers – Right and Left Talgar.
The route is not an easy. Monakhov’s Gorge is small, about two kilometers. The main decoration of the route awaits travelers at the final stage. The trail rests against two-cascade falls , height approximately 12 meters. Even here there is an unusual source, the so-called “perched”. It is enough to dig out a small pole and the water will accumulates in it. People coming to a monastery to gain this water and often to carry away with itself, considering that it possesses salutary properties. Thousands of tourists and pilgrims rises to these places annually.
According to the stories of believers, the one who has ever come here must feel incredible enlightenment and purification of the soul, to obtain a powerful energy recharge.
